Stress Management and Relaxation Therapy. There has never been a greater need for Relaxation Therapy due to the competitive pressure of our working world, environmental hazards and family battles. We can never truly get away and relax due to modern technology, phone calls, texts, emails, facebook etc. People can always contact us and we are like open books that everyone knows where we are and what we are doing! We no longer have the family support networks to help take pressure off of us. How do you control your stress? · Smoking? · Drinking? · Drugs? · Overeating? · Shopping? · Watching television to try to unwind?
A relaxed body, by definition, must be one that is free of discomfort and disharmony, which requires a certain level of physical fitness and freedom from disease. Complete relaxation can only come when the individual is at peace with him or herself, both in a mental and physical state. Through the years we accumulate the memory of many types of experiences that affect our emotional, psychological and physical well-being. Some experiences create mild tense reactions, where as others can be so traumatic that they affect the balance of every aspect of our lives, causing us to maintain levels of tension that can promote serious psychological and physical disease. The memories of the events that have caused us to feel that we must protect ourselves are stored in the subconscious mind and the scars become imprints in our physical make-up, our body language and behaviour. The body is the store of our subconscious and conscious material. The body has its own way of memorising and storing events, creating patterns of posture and habitual behaviour that will remain with us until we consciously change those imprints. We often say an ‘elephant never forgets’, a body never forgets and cannot lie. Learning how to relax the body and mind is a system of educating ourselves that there are ways of responding to stress other than the pattern we appear to be locked in. Since most of our behaviour is conditioned, we respond through memory, rather than experiencing the newness of the moment with awareness and freedom from fear and anticipation. Anticipation of an event is often more stressful than the event itself and thought stimulates our biochemistry to release signals that tense our bodies. Tension accumulates as blocked energy which over time becomes crystallised into rigid behavioural, mental or postural patterns. The more intense or the longer you have held the pattern, the deeper it’s imprinting and the more challenging to transform. Where there is tension, you will discover great energy. It takes a huge amount of vitality to hold onto tension for long periods of time. Week 1. What is Stress? Signs of Stress and how it affects the body. What is fight or flight?
