Nature’s Sunshine Products

History of Company.
As a boy, Gene Hughes would often come home from school and smell a pungent aroma even before he stepped into the house. He knew what this meant: his mother was making another one of her garlic sandwiches. "Taking herbs ran in my family," he says with a smile. Gene learned firsthand their nutritional value.
Later on, Gene found himself with a nagging stomach condition that just wouldn't go away. It was only natural that he took the advice of a neighbour who suggested he take cayenne pepper to ease his discomfort. It worked! Gene found himself feeling much better.
The only problem was that swallowing a spoonful of cayenne pepper was no easy task. That's when his wife, Kristine, hit on the idea of putting the powder into an easy-to-swallow gelatine capsule. A revolutionary idea was born. Gene chose to share what he learned with others. He soon enlisted the support of his family, Dick and Pauline Hughes and Jay and Arva Hughes, to begin a small family business.

"We weren't product driven," Gene explains. "We focused on helping people."
Today much has been written about the benefits of herbs like cayenne, but in 1972 when Gene, Kristine and Pauline started encapsulating herbs and selling them to health food stores, they were pioneers in their field. "Back then, herbs weren't as well-known as they are today," says Kristine. "We know what it's like to be on the fringe. But look at us now: we're mainstream!"
Kristine is quick to add though, "Nature's Sunshine has always been about people. Our creed stresses helping others to help themselves to a healthier, happier life. That hasn't changed."

Why do we need to take herbal supplements?
The average age of people in the UK:
75 years for a man.
82 years for women.
The correct age span should be 110-120 years, still living a healthy active lifestyle.
Very few people in fact 1 in 10,000 actually die of old age! The die of illnesses that could have been prevented.

· You are what you eat! The food we consume often causes fatigue, bloating, weight gain, diabetes and other health problems.
· Poor diet and lifestyle.
· Lack of education through parents and the government on types of food to eat, we often start the day with the wrong type of nutrition.
· Diet designed for taste buds and not for our health and wellbeing.
· We eat mainly processed foods full of additives and preservatives. 80% of most diets are refined and processed food.
· Malnutrition Type B is now common in UK.
· Excess sugar, additives, salt and bad fats.
· We overcook our food which destroys the nutrition.
· Modern day farming leaves the soil depleted of minerals, in Europe 72% of the minerals have been lost in the last 100 years. In England 10% of the soil is infertile and increasing. We now need to eat 10 tomatoes to 1 we would have eaten in the 1940’s to get the same nutritional value from it.
· Pesticides are sprayed on the crops to kill bugs, mice and rats, these were originally developed as nerve poisons in the war by the Military. The pesticides destroy the micro-organisms in the soil; these are what make minerals available for the plants.
· The food we eat is harvested too early so it lasts longer. The nutritional content has not fully developed before harvesting.
· Food is put into cold storage for weeks and months depending on the crop, foods lose nutrition while in cold storage and are treated regular with preservatives to keep it looking good.
· Ageing and Stress can result in poor digestion of food.
· A poor digestive system can leave you deficient in nutrients.
· Depletion from drugs, many types of medication depletes nutrients in the body or destroys your friendly bacteria. Drugs like aspirins, paracetamol, antidepressants, statins and antibiotics.
· Environmental Pollution cause toxins in the body, toxins combined with a lack of cleansing nutrients can trigger asthma, allergies, congestion and inflammation.
We are like a car; we need fuel, water, oil, servicing and repairs from time to time. Even though our body is more complicated than a car, we use this analogy to identify that you too need fuel (nutrients), water, oil (essential fatty acids), servicing (health checks) and repairs (to help you when you are ill).
If you put the wrong type of fuel in your car then it will stop working. Like if we ingest too much salt, sugar, bad fats, alcohol, bad carbohydrates foods or toxins, then our body will eventually stop working properly too.

Our body is a finely tuned biological machine requiring the right types of nutrients, enzymes, water, oxygen and exercise to function, see below:
The Recommended Foods Types to Eat Daily.

There are seven essential nutrients that sustain human life:
1. Water – This is the body’s most basic nutritional need and is required for almost every function and without it you will die in just a few days. You must not reduce fluid intake to lose weight as it dangerous. You must not ignore thirst; you should drink at least eight large glasses of water a day. The body also gets water from milk, eggs, meat, vegetables and fruit.
2. Protein – This is produced from amino acids and is essential for growth and maintenance of the body tissues, blood cells, hormones and enzymes. Protein is found in meat, poultry, fish, milk, cheese, eggs and vegetable like green beans and tomatoes, grains, seeds and nuts. This should be at least 10/15% of your daily calories intake.
3. Carbohydrates – These provide fuel to meet your energy needs. Complex Carbohydrates are the most important type, known as starches. They are found in many plant foods like wheat, rice, potatoes, pasta and yarns. These should be 55/60% of your daily food intake.
4. Fibre – This is an indigestible carbohydrate and important to general health. There are two types of fibre insoluble and soluble, insoluble fibre helps the digestive process, it can help prevent haemorrhoids and may help prevent cancer of the lower bowel. You can get it from wheat, rice, pasta, bran, wholegrain, cereals and breads, nuts and prunes. Soluble fibre is thought to reduce cholesterol and prevent arterial disease and heart attacks. You can get it from oats, peas, beans, root vegetables and citrus fruit. You should have at least 18grms of fibre a day.
5. Fat – This is essential as an energy store and can help insulate the body against rapid heat loss and helps the body produce hormones. It can cushion vital organs like the liver and kidneys and aid the absorption of certain vitamins. There are two types of fats which are saturated like butter and unsaturated like vegetable oil. Foods very high in fat like fast foods, fried foods and sugary snacks should be avoided as very little nutrient value. Unsaturated fats may help protect you against heart disease. Fat should be about 30% of your diet, but most people regularly exceed this.
6. Vitamins – These are organic compounds, they are essential for body growth, function, repair and maintenance. Vitamins are categorised into two groups, water soluble and fat soluble. Water soluble vitamins include B and C; they are needed daily but are not stored in the body’s tissues. Fat soluble A, D, E and K are stored in the body for longer periods of time and so excessive intake may be harmful.
7. Minerals – These are essential inorganic compounds that aid energy production and body maintenance as well as assisting in the control of the body reactions and reflexes. These are three groups, macro minerals, micro minerals and trace elements. Macro minerals including calcium, sodium and magnesium are required in large amounts. The body’s needs micro minerals like iron, manganese and zinc in lesser quantities. Trace elements required in minuscule amounts include manganese and iodine. A diet that contains lean red meat, fish, dairy products, nuts, cereals and pulses and a wide range of vegetables should provide all the minerals essential for health.
